1978 Mercian Cut Fast Back model 531 (SL) Super Light.
1978 Tom Crowther (Mercian) Racing Cycle Club Cut Fast Back model 531 (SL) Super Light..whew what a title!
Mercian Cycles was started by Tom Crowther and Lou Barker in 1946, Crowther sold the business in 1965 to his frame builder William Betton. Crowther opened another bike shop and had Mercian build his bikes, in-fact many Crowther frames (like this one) were numbered with Mercian frame numbers. This frame, built by Mercian in 1978, was Tom Crowther's flagship model and with it's fastback seat cluster and attention to detail is not unlike his classic signature "Superlight" Mercian model. The original owner had the bike repainted by Mercian with Mercian decals in the early eighties. The bike was rarely used from new, which shows in it's beautifully preserved paint finish and it's super tight and "live' ride quality.
